1st Day of School

Today we had a wonderful first day of school! The children were excited to be back, see old friends, and make new ones. We read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and made "Kissing Hand" puzzles for our families so that we could tell them about our day while we put them together. At the end of the day we even had a very special sugar cookie in the shape of a hand with a heart cut out! We also read First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg and talked about how it's okay to be nervous when you are in a new situation.

We also read We Share Everything by Robert Munsch. That was definitely one of our favorites! Then we worked on our first class book where each child completed a page and wrote and drew what we could share in first grade. Some students even wrote about what we shouldn't share in first grade.

We spent quite a bit of time reading books about rules and then we created our own class rules together. We read a very silly book called The Rules by Marty Kelley. Then we read Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. We talked about how Max didn't follow the rules and why it's important to have rules and follow them.

We also explored some of our math manipulatives--pattern blocks and color tiles and began working on a time capsule which we will open on the last day of 1st grade. Whew! What a busy day! I just can't wait until our next day together! We are going to have such a wonderful year!

P.S. I will add more photos once I receive more photo permission forms back.
