Pebbles, Sand, and Silt
In November, we began a new science unit--Pebbles, Sand, and Silt. First, each child chose a rock and wrote down 3 attributes. They also drew a picture of their rock. We discussed similar and different characteristics among the rocks. We worked on sorting rocks by their attributes. Then, the next day, I introduced the students to three types of rocks-basalt, tuff, and scoria. We did different experiments with the rocks. For example, we rubbed them together to see what would happen. We also emerged them in water and recorded our observations.
