My Place in the World

We returned this week to start a new unit in Social Studies on Maps and a new unit in Math on Fractions. First we read "Me on the Map" by Joan Sweeney. We discussed where we live--our streets, city, state, country, continent, and planet. Then, we began to work on our map projects. First, we started with our houses. Students wrote down their address, too. Then, we made our city, state, country, continent, and planet. We will combine everything into a mobile when we're done. We also learned about directions-North, South, East, and West. We are learning all about fractions, too- halves, fourths, and thirds, numerators & denominators, and being able to tell and show how many parts of something is shaded.
